About the Procedure

Vaginoplasty is performed by a urogynecologist or vaginal reconstructive surgeon under general anesthesia and in a hospital setting where you will stay for a maximum of two days. Vaginoplasty is a standard gynecologic surgical procedure that takes about 60 – 90 minutes with you spending about an hour in the recovery room where you are monitored for any post-operative complications.

What is Recovery Like?

After your surgery there will be some pain and discomfort. Your physician will prescribe medication to relieve pain and antibiotics to prevent infection. You will also be instructed to refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 2 weeks or until you heal completely. This is very important since the contraction of vaginal muscles during sexual activity may cause tearing and incomplete or delayed healing.

After a week you will have your sutures removed and receive instructions on specific exercises to strengthen and tighten your pelvic muscles. Vaginal muscle stretching exercises are very important since they can reduce the amount of scar tissue formed and help to ensure an adequate sized vagina.

You must also avoid being constipated and lifting heavy objects for about a month after your surgery

Results

The results from Vaginoplasty can be very rewarding – both for the woman’s self esteem and where improved sexual function is a goal.

Since Vaginoplasty tightens and restores the vaginal muscles, it re-establishes friction that increases sexual gratification for both women and men. There is a 98% success rate. In about 2% of the cases a minor revision may be necessary to achieve appropriate results.
